The Subaru Ascent is a strong competitor in the very crowded mid-sized three-row crossover segment. With its all-wheel-drive, seating for eight passengers and all of Subaru’s technology and reputation for safety, this is a serious contender.
Notable Changes From the Previous Year
Having undergone a refresh in 2023, the Ascent is carried through into 2024 with no changes.
Trims
There are five trims available for 2024. The entry-level trims are the Convenience which starts at $44,572*, and the Touring at $49,072*.
The middle of the list is occupied by the Onyx at $50,872*, and the premium trims are the Limited at $54,472* and the Premier at $57,572*.
Infotainment and Technology Features
The Ascent has an 11.6-inch touchscreen that is conveniently located for both the driver and front-seat passengers running the infotainment system. There are large icons, making it easy to find what you’re looking for. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard offerings, as is a Wi-Fi hotspot. The audio system has six speakers and is SiriusXM capable. The Limited has navigation included.
There’s Bluetooth connectivity for your smartphone as well as six USB A and C ports throughout the cabin. Except for the Convenience, all trims have Subaru Starlink included as a standard feature.
Exterior Design
The Ascent has all the hallmarks of Subaru DNA. With a muscular and powerful profile, it’s clear this is a vehicle for the adventurous. It has a strong front fascia that makes an instant impression. The sleek LED headlights are steering responsive and come on automatically in low light conditions. The Ascent sits on 18 or 20-inch wheels that give it an impressive 220mm of ground clearance.
On the roof are two black cargo rails, giving the Ascent an adventurous look. They’re built to carry heavy loads and are aerodynamically designed to assist with fuel consumption. There’s also an optional sliding sunroof to add to the feeling of freedom.
The powered tailgate can be opened hands-free from the key fob. It also has a memory function and will stop where it is set.
Interior Comfort and Cargo Space
The Ascent has a roomy, comfortable interior that’s the hallmark of a crossover. There’s a raised seating position and a choice of seating options. There are three rows of seats, but the third row is not designed for adults, and only children will be comfortable in this row. There are options in the Touring and Limited to have the second row of seats as captain’s chairs instead of a bench. Other seating options for the high-end trims include leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, heated rear seats and a memory function for the driver's seat.
As with all SUV-type vehicles, there are lots of cubbies and storage compartments to hold all those loose items. In the cargo area, there are some clever ideas to assist with carrying cargo, such as Velcro straps that will hold up the cargo floor to give additional space.
The Ascent has 458 litres of cargo space in the rear, and with the second and third rows folded out of the way, this increases to 2,140 litres.
Performance Features (Engine Type, Horsepower, Torque)
The Ascent has one engine configuration for 2024. This is a 2.4-litre turbocharged DOHC 16-valve motor delivering 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft torque. This motor is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). There are steering wheel paddle shifters to make changing gears that bit more exciting.
The Ascent has light, accurate steering and excellent suspension that cushions the cabin from road bumps. With its all-wheel drive the Ascent is a four-season car and will safely navigate all weather conditions.
The Ascent is fuel efficient for a car its size. It should give approximately 12.3 L/100km around town and 9.4 L/100km on the highway.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
Subaru is a responsible vehicle manufacturer that does not have high levels of safety and driver assistance technology restricted to only high-level trims. All the Ascent trims have exceptional levels of safety technology.
Subaru’s fantastic EyeSight safety suite is standard across all trims, as is a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control with vehicle hold on an incline, traction control, forward collision warning with emergency braking, lane keeping assist and lane departure warnings.
The 2023 Subaru Ascent has a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS, and as there are no changes for 2024, this should be the case for the 2024 year model.
