The Subaru Crosstrek is a great mid-sized SUV that is a rugged, affordable, and frugal car that is as comfortable on the tar as it is on wilderness trails. This is truly a boardroom-to-campground car that has impeccable road manners and is safe for all ages of drivers. With a comfortable cabin, loads of technology, and power, the Subaru Crosstrek will be at home in any garage.
Notable Changes From the Previous Year
It may look similar to the 2023 model, but the 2024 Crosstrek has been redesigned and starts the third generation of the capable SUV. The new Crosstrek features a redesigned muscular but streamlined exterior and a more comfortable cabin.
Notable changes include the loss of the manual gearbox in favour of a CVT across all trims, but the engine options are unchanged from 2023. Also new this year is the Wilderness trim, a first for the Crosstrek. This new trim has a 9.3-inch lift and additional exterior protection.
Trims
There are five trims available for the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek. The lower end of the list will find the Convenience that starts at $31,572* and the Touring at $34,772*.
The mid-point on the list finds the Onyx starting at $36,572*. The higher end of the list features the Limited at $39,572*, and topping the list is the all-new Wilderness, which starts at $40,572*.
Infotainment and Technology Features
The infotainment system runs on a 7-inch touchscreen with four speakers in the Convenience, but on all other trims, it runs on an 11.6-inch touchscreen with six speakers. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is SiriusXM satellite radio and Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity with voice activation. The premium Crosstrek trims have a premium Harman Kardon audio system with ten speakers.
Exterior Design
The Crosstrek has protective cladding and 8.7 inches of ground clearance, protecting a sleek, compact SUV. The muscular exterior is enhanced by a large grille featuring a layered honeycomb look, aggressively styled LED headlights and stunning new wheel designs.
The roof sports dual cargo rails designed to carry anything from mountain bikes to kayaks.
Interior Comfort and Cargo Space
The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek is as spacious and cargo-capable as its predecessor, with its distinctive utilitarian but comfortable look. Subaru has improved the seat design, and they’re now more comfortable and heated seats are standard. Most trims come with cloth upholstery, but leather is an option, and the high-end trims all have decorative seat stitching. Adding to the comfort levels is the additional sound-deadening material that has been added to the cabin to damp road and exterior noise.
There are lots of storage pockets, but the deep pockets on the front doors are great for bulkier items such as water bottles. There are loads of cubbies and storage compartments for all kinds of loose items.
The cargo area on the Crosstrek is very spacious. With the rear seats in use, there’s 564 litres of cargo space in the trunk. Folding the rear seats flat increases the cargo space to 1549 litres. If this is still not enough, the Crosstrek can haul an additional 680 kilograms.
Performance Features (Engine Type, Horsepower, Torque)
The lower-end trims are all fitted with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer motor, making 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, with the Onyx, Limited and Wilderness coming with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder boxer motor making 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft torque. Both motors are paired with a CTV transmission, driving all the wheels.
The Crosstrek has a great chassis that inspires confidence on the road as well as on backcountry trails. With 9.3 inches of ground clearance, the Wilderness is ideally suited to off-road driving, while the rest of the trims have a more modest 8.7 inches of ground clearance.
With the 2.0-litre motor, the Crosstrek can be expected to return 8.1 L/100km around town or 7.0 L/100km on the highway. The larger 2.5-litre motor can be expected to give 8.8 L/100km around town and 7.0 L/100km when cruising the highway.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
The Crosstrek comes with a full range of safety features and driver assistance technology. There are all the usual airbags at the sides and in front, and it received a good rating from IIHS for 2024, with a superior rating for front crash prevention.
Standard in the Crosstrek is Subaru’s Eyesight Driver Assist Technology. This is described by Subaru as “an extra set of eyes on the road.” It detects objects in the road in front of the vehicle and will brake or reduce engine power if it calculates that you may hit the object. This minimizes the frontal impact if there’s an accident.
The Limited and Wilderness trims come with blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alerts, and automatic reverse braking, but all trims have rear-view cameras and automatic reverse braking.
All trims have Starlink Safety and Security technology that works in conjunction with your smartphone. This system is designed to keep you safe, and in the event of an accident, an operator will be alerted so first responders can be alerted. The same system can be used by passengers by sending an SOS message to get roadside assistance.
A Compact, Safe, Off-road Capable SUV
The new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek is every bit as competent as its predecessors, but more comfortable and better appointed. It has a quiet cabin, great cargo space, dynamic good looks, and great off-road capability. To test drive the Crosstrek, come into Peterborough Subaru and see for yourself why we’re recommending it.
