Subaru has officially joined the electric vehicle market with their global debut of the all-new 2023 Solterra, Subaru’s first all-electric vehicle. Solterra combines it’s new electric drivetrain with the same quality and ability that the brand is known for. The Solterra will come standard with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, X-MODE, and 8.3 inches of ground clearance making it just as capable as the rest of the Subaru lineup.
Performance
Solterra is powered by two electric motors, one powering the rear wheels and one powering the front wheels. Together these engines produce 215 horsepower and 248 lb.-ft. of torque and can reach an estimated range of 354 kilometers on a full charge. Each model will come standard with a new Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system that’s paired to Subaru StarDrive Technology that provides on demand torque at all speeds to provide outstanding traction and capability.
X-MODE will also be a standard feature of all models and new for the Solterra is Grip Control which combines Hill Ascent and Descent Assist to increase control when going up and down steep hills.
Battery and Charging
The Solterra will come equipped with a high-capacity lithium-ion battery that will provide an estimated range of 354 kilometers. The Solterra conveniently comes with a Level 1 charger that plugs into a standard home outlet for easy home charging. You can also have a Level 2 charger installed at your home to provide faster charging for your vehicle. For a fast charge, you can use a Level 3 charger that is capable of charging the battery up to 80% of the total battery capacity in under one hour.
Interior
The interior of the Solterra is as versatile as the vehicle itself with a low load height, extra wide cargo access, and a total of 126 cubic feet of interior space. The flat floor of the Solterra allows for ample legroom for each passenger as well as increased space for cargo. The modern cabin has been logically laid out with soft-touch materials and an available all-weather upholstery for added ease and durability. You can also experience a full view of the sky above with the available panoramic sunroof.
Advanced Technology and Connectivity
The Subaru Solterra will offer the latest in technology and connectivity integration making it easier than ever to stay connected while you drive. There will be an all-new multimedia system that has an available 12.3-inch touchscreen as well as a digital dashboard that displays your information in beautiful high definition. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will come standard on all models. To keep the center console free of clutter there is an available wireless charging pad so you can easily set your device down and go.
For added convenience Subaru will offer a smartphone app that allows the user to control the climate of the vehicle as well as unlocking or locking the vehicle from a far distance even while in the garage thanks to zero tailpipe emissions. You can even set up the Solterra to automatically heat or cool the interior before you leave so that the cabin is at your optimal temperature. Since this is an electric vehicle, this can even be done if the Solterra is in a garage as there are no gas emissions.
Safety
A suite of safety technology will be added to the Solterra including Subaru’s EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. There is also a 360 degree Surround View Camera that gives you a birds eye view of the vehicle so you can maneuver in parking spots or tight spaces while being able to avoid obstacles close to the vehicle. Safe Exit Assist will come standard on all models and will alert occupants before exiting the vehicle if there is another vehicle detected. Other standard features include LED Headlights with High Beam Assist, driver and passenger frontal airbags, side curtain airbags, side torso/pelvis airbags, and driver/passenger knee airbags.
The body of the Solterra has been created with a number of body “skeletons” that maximize material strength while reducing the overall weight. In the event of a collision the body of the vehicle will transfer the energy from the impact and disperse it away from the cabin and onto the multiple body “skeletons” to absorb the impact while keeping the force of the impact away from the passengers.
The first Solterra’s are due to arrive in mid-2022. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook for updates as well as other news and events!
